Banking Terms You Should Know
Ever looked at your app or statement and thought, “What does that even mean?” You’re not alone. Banking terms sound complicated at first, but the basics are simpler than they look.
Soon, you’ll be out here managing your money like a pro and not stressing every time you send or receive cash. Plus, you’ll finally know what you’re even looking at when you check your account.

🏦 Routing Number
Your routing number is a 9-digit code that acts like your financial institution’s address. It’s what's used when money moves between banks or credit unions.
You’ll need it when setting up direct deposit, moving money around or paying bills online.
🏠Account Number
Your account number is your money’s home base. It’s the unique code that tells the financial institution exactly where your cash should land.
You’ll use it when you’re getting paid, linking accounts or setting up payments.

✍️Checks
Checks might be old school, but they’re still important. They’re paper slips that tell your financial institution to pay someone from your account. Checks have your routing number and account number printed on them, so it’s important to keep them in a safe place.
You might use a check for rent, paying someone who doesn’t take cards or setting up certain payments.
🏧 PIN (Personal Identification Number)
A PIN is your secret code (usually 4 digits, sometimes more) that proves you’re actually you.
You’ll use your PIN at the ATM or when you’re making an in-store purchase with a debit card. Don’t share it, and avoid making it something obvious, like your birthday.

🕵️Other Common Terms You’ll See
Here are some everyday words you’ll see when managing your money:
Available Balance: The amount you can actually spend. This takes into consideration any pending transactions.
Pending Transactions: Purchases you bought or money you’re receiving that haven’t fully gone through yet. This typically can take 1-3 days.
Deposit: Money added to your account.
Withdrawal: Money taken out of your account.
Overdraft: When you spend more than what’s actually in your account. This can result in fees, so keep an eye on your balance.
